Tips for Testing

Hello Parents,

As you are likely aware, Oregon has adopted new learning standards in math and English language arts. When standards change, the test that measures students’ progress toward those standards also changes. In other words, the State can’t measure new learning goals with an old test.

The new test is called the Smarter Balanced test. It’s different from the old test (OAKS) in many ways. To help students get ready for the test, and to support what we’re doing here at school to help them prepare, our school will periodically post  “Tips for Testing” until test time.

Students who took the Smarter Balanced field test noted that the test asked them to do a lot of typing. Their advice for success on the Smarter Balanced test is to take your time, and practice typing beforehand.

The more comfortable a student is with typing, the smoother the test-taking experience will be. The attached flyer has links to websites that help students improve typing skills. I encourage you to have your student practice at home a few times a week prior to test day.   So, practice those typing skills, and try out the practice tests. Links can be found on the Parents’ Guide to Graduation website: www.skgradguide.com/doing/state-tests

The Smarter Balanced test is a computer test that will require students to listen for sounds and then answer questions. If your student is not familiar with headphones, you might consider giving them some exposure to a set. This sounds like a small thing, but it can make a difference in making your student feel comfortable on test day.

Please click on the attachments below for the first 3 "Tips for Testing". Thank you for all you do to encourage student success!

Sincerely,

Mimi Pileggi, Principal
